HORIZON Learner’s Handbook

Risks and Hazards

Work experience/taster/practical sessions can be a high-risk area and it is important to keep yourself and others safe while attending HORIZON. Be aware that materials such as bricks and timber are heavy, so manual handling, crushing injuries and cuts are common. There may also be materials considered chemicals that can harm you if they are ingested or get in your eyes.

Tools such as shovels, saws and hammers can be sharp or heavy and must be used carefully. Equipment for manual handling such as barrows and pump trucks in the workshop can be sharp, heavy and/or have moving parts. All tools and equipment must only be used for the purpose it was designed for.

All practical tasks need to be assessed for risk and precautions put in place.

If you are unsure if you need to wear additional PPE ask your tutor before you start the task. Not wearing PPE is not an option and you will be asked to leave.

There is a PPE declaration form for you to fill out and hand back to HORIZON Administration.
