HORIZON Learner’s Handbook

Codes of Conduct

Our codes of conduct are clear and non-negotiable. We expect mutual respect and support from everyone at Horizon.

All our learners have had to overcome difficulties in order to gain education and for them to face further difficulties whilst at Horizon is totally unacceptable to us.

Make yourself acquainted with our rules. The principles that underpin them are simple, treat others as you would like to be treated and take care of everything at Horizon as if it was your own.

HORIZON has a zero-tolerance policy towards

  • Violence towards people or property
  • Being under the influence/possession of drugs and alcohol
  • Inappropriate use of language
  • Disruption due to audio equipment and mobile phones in class.
  • The use or audio equipment of any sort, including mobile phones is not allowed during any class. If you cannot leave it alone then ‘turn it off’.

Attendance to classes/courses at HORIZON

  • You must bring all the equipment you require for a class to the class, failure to do so will lead to you not being able to participate
  • In the workshops you must wear your Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) at all times. Failure to do so will lead to you not being able to participate
  • All drinks must be in a bottle with a sealable top.
  • Food is not allowed in any of the classrooms or the workshops
  • Smoking anywhere in the building is not permitted. There is a smoking area in the rear yard.
  • Late attendance to a class is not tolerated, except in exceptional circumstances. Prior notification is required, i.e. a message sent to your tutor or HORIZON admin.
  • Disruption to a class is not tolerated. Anyone causing a disturbance will be told to leave
  • Attendance at all classes is essential in order to pass your course. If your attendance is not close to 100% it will result in failure. We will not waste your time, so don’t waste ours
  • Copying the work of others is called plagiarism. It is cheating and is unacceptable. Plagiarism is easy to identify. Learners who copy work from others will be failed.

Conduct while on work experience

  • Respect all members of the group, the employer, customer and the local community
  • Reputation is everything, if you damage yours or HORIZONwill result in disciplinary action

  • Tools/property that are damaged intentionally through misuse or neglect will result in disciplinary action
  • Show a positive and motivated attitude at all times
  • Eat and smoke in designated places

Failure to comply with these rules will result in either being returned to the HORIZON Training Centre or asked to go home directly. In addition, depending on the severity of the breach of rules you may not be able to attend any future projects or work experience thereby affecting your ability to complete the course.

Lateness or non-attendance at Work Experience Placement

If you are unable to attend or are going to be late getting to your placement must contact HORIZON or your tutor at the earliest opportunity.

You may be asked to provide evidence to support your reason for not attending such as a note from home, doctors note or appointment card. This may be required especially if you have a record of lateness or non-attendance.HORIZON will promptly remove anyone from a placement who is habitually absent or late.

Lanyards

HORIZON Community Training operates a lanyard system. Your lanyard holds your learner card and information card.

This helps us to quickly and easily without having to challenge or question in order to

  • identify who a person is
  • whether that person is a learner, staff member or visitor
  • whether that person should be on the HORIZON premises

In addition, as it is standard in most business environment to wear an ID badge of some description it prepares you for wearing one as a habit whilst in a working environment.

Always remember

  • to wear your lanyard when attending HORIZON (unless told otherwise by your tutor)
  • that it must be worn so that it is clearly visible and readable
  • Report immediately if lost and replace it as soon as practicable.

You can personalise your own lanyard by attaching pins or small badges.

Your first lanyard, card holder and student card are free when you enrol at HORIZON. If you lose or want to replace your lanyard it will cost £1.50 (£1 for a new lanyard and card holder and 50p for a new student card)

Forget your Lanyard and $2 HORIZON dollars will be deducted from your account. Continually not bring in your lanyard and student card may result in further disciplinary action.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that must be worn at all times in the work environment is your steel toe cap boots and overalls/work cloths (and at times a provided uniform). These you must provide yourself (Finical assistance may be available), without these you are unable to take part in the session.

It is not up to the tutor to provide it and you may be asked not to take part in practical until you have the correct PPE. Additional PPE such as hi-vis vests, hard hats, gloves, and eye/ear protection will be provided when required. If you are told to wear a particular item of PPE by the tutor it must be worn without any exceptions.
