Taster Sessions

Taster session are designed to give you an idea of what to expect when attending a vocational course at College or what to expect when going into employment. It gives you a chance to put into practice your learning. It will help you to see whether it is right for you, and also whether or you not are ready for progression. These sessions may vary in time, depending the needs of the learner, available space and time timetabling.

These tasters can be in any area within employment such as:

  • Animal Care
  • Catering
  • Construction/Engineering
  • Media
  • Music Hair and Beauty
  • Art and Design
  • Fitness, Sports and Health
  • Public Services
  • Care
  • Retail/Business
  • Travel and Tourism
  • Fashion and Textiles

These taster sessions may be based on around an Enterprise project or incorporated into a Community Project such as a care farm or nursery.

 

Work Experience

Work experience is an important part of the course and gives an opportunity to develop important employability skills such as time keeping, meeting deadlines, following instructions in a real work environment. Work experience maybe carried out both on HORIZON’s grounds, as part of a community project or an individual work placement. It is designed to appeal to everyone, be enjoyable, enrich and enhance your knowledge of the work place.

Feedback will be given on learners in areas such as appearance, performance, knowledge, attitude, etc. in order for you to develop your and increase your chances of progression of employment.

Examples of work experience placements

  • Landscaping and maintain of community grounds and buildings
  • Volunteering at local care farms, community projects such as nurseries and good causes
  • Up-cycling or renovation projects
  • Organising and implementing enterprise ideas
  • Work placements relevant to progression such as a day at a local business

 

Tutorials

Tutorial session are opportunities for personal development and improve your social/individual skills and knowledge to help improve your awareness of self and others. It covers a wide range of subjects such as health lifestyle, budgeting and may include guest speakers.

You are expected to take part in all aspects of your course including Functional skills, Theory sessions, Work Experience and Tutorials.
